Step 1: Approach the Wave

As you paddle out and see a wave approaching, position yourself correctly. Keep paddling until you are about a board’s length away from the wave to maintain momentum.

Step 2: Grip Your Board

Firmly hold both rails of your surfboard near your chest. Your hands should be evenly placed to keep control during the roll.

Step 3: Roll the Board Over

Just before the wave reaches you, take a deep breath and roll your board upside down while holding on tight. Your body should now be underwater with the board above you.

Step 4: Stay Close and Stable

Keep your arms extended, gripping the board tightly. Your body should remain close to the board to minimize resistance from the wave’s power.

Step 5: Let the Wave Pass

Allow the wave to roll over you and your board. The water pressure will push your board down rather than backward, keeping you in position.

Step 6: Roll Back Over

Once the wave has passed, use your core strength to roll the board back over and quickly get back on top. Resume paddling immediately to maintain momentum.

Step 7: Mastering the Turtle Roll

Like any surf skill, mastering the turtle roll takes practice. Try it in different wave conditions to gain confidence and control.

By learning how to turtle roll effectively, you’ll be able to handle bigger waves with ease, making your surf sessions more enjoyable and less exhausting.
